Last week I had an “ear” catching conversation with one of my patients. She has been suffering from chronic neck pain for many years. Finally, her family physician recommended a steroid epidural injection for pain relief. Epidural means getting an injection into the spinal cord. This patient is a registered nurse and she is well aware of the complications and side effects epidural injections can have.
She decided to get acupuncture treatments first to exhaust all resources before she would put herself at risk with and epidural injection. So far Acupuncture has worked very well for her. A few weeks after she started treatments with her Practitioner of Chinese Medicine (aka Acupuncturist) she feels great and does not even consider other pain relieving medications. During her last visit she said “Igor, I could have gotten one of those contaminated methylprednisolone injections. Thanks to your treatments with Acupuncture I did not have to expose myself to that risk.” This might sound a bit dramatic but the less procedures are performed on your body, the lesser the risk of negative side effects.
In our Acupuncture Clinic in Denver we see many patients with carpal tunnel syndrome, neck, low back, shoulder and knee pain, who are able to avoid surgery because Acupuncture works for them. I like to point out that especially with pain issues it is crucial to find a Practitioner of Chinese Medicine to perform Acupuncture on you. Other health care professionals including MD’s, Chiropractors and Physical Therapists have very minimal requirements to get a “license to needle”. They might be great professionals in their own discipline but they do not even get close to the skills of an Acupuncturist when it comes to treating a patient with needles.
